Anti-Censorship Win of the Day: In a major victory for the Internet, and major blow to its would-be censors, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), co-sponsor of SOPA’s sister bill PIPA, has officially withdrawn his support for the legislation.

“I have been a co-sponsor of the PROTECT IP Act because I believe it’s important to protect American ingenuity, ideas and jobs from being stolen through Internet piracy, much of it occurring overseas through rogue websites in China,” the Senator wrote in a post on his Facebook page. “However, we must do this while simultaneously promoting an open, dynamic Internet environment that is ripe for innovation and promotes new technologies.”

In addition to withdrawing his support out of “concerns about the impact the bill could have on access to the Internet,” Sen. Rubio also urges Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid “to abandon his plan to rush the bill to the floor.”

PIPA is currently slated to be voted on next Tuesday, January 24th.

BREAKING NEWS: NDAA BILL HAS BEEN RECEIVED BY THE WHITE HOUSE

occupyallstreets:

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was just passed by Congress, and is on its way to the President’s desk. The bill contains a dangerous provision that could be read to authorize the military to detain anyone in our country, including U.S. citizens, without charge or trial.

The bill gives the military the authority to arrest and detain citizens indefinitely, torture them and even assassinate them on U.S. soil.

NDAA declares the United States a “battlefield” and give Obama and any future presidents the power to transfer suspected members and supporters of Al Qaeda, the Taliban, or “associated” groups “to the custody or control of the person’s country of origin, any other foreign country, or any other foreign entity,” rendition as it has applied to foreigners in violation of human rights.

The President’s advisors are recommending that he not veto this legislation despite earlier promises to do so.

The whole world is not a battlefield and President Obama should make that clear. Tell the President to veto any bill that contains indefinite detention without charge or trial.

Latin American leaders assail U.S. drug ‘market’ | The Washington Post

Latin American leaders have joined together to condemn the U.S. government for soaring drug violence in their countries, blaming the United States for the transnational cartels that have grown rich and powerful smuggling dope north and guns south.

Alongside official declarations, Latin American governments have expressed growing disgust for U.S. drug consumers — both the addict and the weekend recreational user heedless of the misery and destruction stemming from their pleasures. +

Israel’s collective punishments

babysansa:

We do not have gas chambers and crematoria, but there is no one fixed method of genocide…The government of Israel, using the military and its instruments of destruction, is not only spilling blood, but it is also suffocating. What other name can be given to the dropping of a one ton bomb over a dense urban area, when the justification is that we wanted to murder a dangerous terrorist and his wife? The rest of the citizens, who were killed and injured among whom are children and women, do not count, of course. How is it possible to explain the expulsion of citizens from their homes at three in the morning pm a rainy night, then depositing bombs in the house, then departing without warning? When those expelled returned home, the bombs were exploded and a brutal murder and destruction of property was thus committed. And what is the justification for what happened in Jenin? How many does one need to murder and destroy for it to be a crime? A crime against humanity - Curfew, closure, brutality, murder, destruction of homes of suspects….Curfew and another curfew, arrests and more arrests, destruction of roads, brutality to the residents at road stops. Benny Alon (a minister in the present government) already said “make their lives so bitter that they will transfer themselves willingly.”
